IELTS Preparation

What is IELTS?

The INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM or IELTS is the world's most popular examination designed to test the English proficiency level of people who are looking to go abroad for immigration, work or study purposes to countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK & USA, where English is the primary language of communication. It assesses your full range of English skills and covers all the four elements:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
You will be scored on a scale of 0-9 which is referred to as the 'band score'. You will be given a band score for each section of the IELTS exam and the average of all the four individual band scores will be the final IELTS score.

IELTS consists of two modules :

  • IELTS General Training module is suited for immigration and employment purposes in countries like Canada, UK, New Zealand, Australia and USA. Some MNCs also use it as a tool to measure the English proficiency level of its employees. It test your ability to use English in everyday life in practical situations.

  • IELTS Academic module is taken by those who are looking for admission into undergraduate and postgraduate courses in an English-speaking country. It is also used for professional registration purposes. It evaluates your ability to understand and communicate in English in an academic environment.

How many segments does IELTS have?

Both the modules are divided into four segments - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

LISTENING: 30 minutes

This segment consists of 4 sections and you will have to answer 40 questions. The recordings, monologues and conversations, will be played only once. You will get 10 minutes to transfer your answers on a fair sheet. Spelling mistakes will be penalized.

READING: 60 minutes

This segment has 40 questions spread over 3 sections. In the General Training module the passages can be from newspapers, journals, magazines, brochures, etc. In the Academic module, the passages are longer  and includes articles from books and newspapers as well. The questions are designed to test your reading skills like identifying main idea, forming a gist or understanding the author's purpose and style of writing.

WRITING: 60 minutes

In the both General Training and Academic modules, this segment has two parts. In the General Training module, Writing Task 1 is a letter (formal or informal) with a minimum limit of 150 words while Writing Task 2 is an essay with a minimum word limit of 250 words. In the Academic module, Writing Task 1 is a report  based on  a given chart, diagram, table or graph with a minimum limit of 150 words while Writing Task 2 is the same as in the general Training module.

SPEAKING: 11-14 minutes

This is the shortest segment, divided into 3 sections,  where examiners will test your English speaking proficiency. Section 1 & 3 are question-answer based while in section 2 you will speak on a given topic for about 2 minutes.
